The discipline of chess in EDUCATION

chess

Ben Franklin said

“The game of chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions; for life is a kind of chess.”

Chess-Now will help your school develop and conduct grade appropriate chess instruction for your students. Cost effective classroom tested lessons that appeal to students are available through Chess-Now consultant instructors. Take advantage of the tremendous popularity of chess by providing quality programming for your school. We offer programs for After School Enrichment, our popular "It's Just Chess for Lunch" noontime sessions or small group lessons for your team or club.

Having done school-related programs since 1994, most of our students play for recreational enjoyment. But many have chosen to compete in scholastic events and have achieved tournament success at the grade school and high school levels.

The Russians Are Here !

Recently a visiting group of Russian High School students made an appearance at Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. GBSO Head Coach Al McWilliams and Chess for Peace Director Mikhail Korenman assembled the teams for a friendly match on a cold snowy afternoon when school wasn't even in session.

The students played some skittles games and then settled down for a double Game-in-15 minute 8 board match against a Glenbard team of current players, alumni and coach. The Russian team (who were all around Expert level strength on the USCF rating scale) had been traveling all week to different high schools.

The Results

The Russian team provided the Glenbard South team a sound beating on boards 3, 5, 6, 7 & 8. They split the games on Board 1 & 4 and their only loss to South was on Board 2.

Board 1 shown top is Bennet Joseph (College of DuPage, Glenbard alumni) drawing his match with Alexey Sarelev.

Board 2 is Glenbard South Assistant Coach Jim Egerton beating Alex Kolosov twice to win the only board for South.

Board 3 is Michael Wurtz (1st Board Glenbard South) giving Vadim Churaev an unsuccessful challenge.

Board 7 was David McWilliams (Glenbard South 5th Board) playing Toofyan Stefanishina.

After the match, the participants enjoyed some team chess (bughouse) together before the Russian players departed for one of their last evenings in the U.S.
